Four short climbs after a pan-flat ride up the Po Valley blew a 23-man breakaway apart on a day of rest for the GC favourites, as Egan Bernal retained the pink jersey ahead of back-to-back summit showdowns in the Alps.

Dan Martin wins stage 17 as Bernal cracks – Giro d’Italia

The fight for pink was reinvigorated in Stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia on the vicious climb of Sega di Ala after race leader Egan Bernal cracked on a day Dan Martin completed his grand slam of Grand Tour stage wins. Irishman Martin was the only rider from a 19-man break to survive, taking a historic win ahead of Portugal’s Joao Almeida and Britain’s Simon Yates.

Egan Bernal dominates gruelling stage 16 – Giro d’Italia

Egan Bernal cemented his status as pink jersey elect with a splendid solo victory in Cortina d’Ampezzo after a huge attack on the Passo Giau – not that fans were able to see it. Owing to the bad weather much of today’s shortened stage in the Dolomites played out mysteriously behind closed doors on a day to forget for Simon Yates and Remco Evenepoel.
