Cape Verde pulled off the shock of the 2026 World Cup so far as they held European champions Spain to a battling goalless draw in their Group H opener in Atlanta. Despite seeing plenty of possession in the first half, Luis De La Fuente’s team – who started with Lamine Yamal on the bench – were unable to break down a determined Cape Verde defence, as Ferran Torres hit the crossbar from close range.

Real Madrid have confirmed the reappointment of Jose Mourinho as head coach. The 63-year-old has agreed a three-year deal and will begin work when the club returns for pre-season training on 13 July. Real Madrid have paid Benfica €15m in compensation to bring the Portuguese head coach back to the Bernabeu – more than a decade after his first stint at the club came to an end.

Jean-Philippe Mateta fired Crystal Palace to their first European trophy as the Eagles edged out Spanish side Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final. The France striker turned home a close-range winner on the rebound from an Adam Wharton strike early in the second half in Leipzig. Marcus Rashford scored a brilliant free-kick as Barcelona clinched back-to-back La Liga titles with a 2-0 win over arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou. Both goals came in the opening 18 minutes as Rashford’s stunning curling effort in the ninth minute was quickly followed by a second from Ferran Torres.
