Tottenham tumble out of Europe- Champions League Roundup
A combined total of 28 goals were scored in tonight’s Champions League action with 12 alone coming in Borussia Dortmund’s clash with Legia Warsaw. These teams did enough to progress tonight: Monaco (group winners),Bayer Leverkusen,Real Madrid,Leicester (group winners) and Juventus. However Tottenham will not be progressing further.
Here’s a full roundup of tonight’s action:
Group E
CSKA Moscow 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen
CSKA Moscow held their German visitors to a draw tonight. Bayer Leverkusen had taken the lead after 16 minutes through Kevin Volland. The Germans looked certain to take three points from Russia but 14 minutes from time CSKA drew level from the spot with Bebras Natcho slotting home.
AS Monaco 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham left the French Reviera empty handed tonight as Monaco took all three points. The hosts squandered an early chance to open the scoring when Radamel Falcao saw his penatly saved by Hugo Lloris. The home side did however take the lead three minutes after the break through Dijbril Sidibe. Spurs pulled it back to 1-1 four minutes later when Harry Kane slotted home a penalty. However the Ligue 1 side regained the lead a minute later through Thomas Lemar. Tottenham tried their best to get back into the game but tonight’s result means they will not progress to the Last 16.
Group F
Borussia Dortmund 8-4 Legia Warsaw
Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warsaw played out a game that will live long in the memory of every fan in attendance as an incredible 12 goals were scored between the sides. The scoring began after ten minutes when Aleksandar Prijovic put Legia ahead. Shinji Kagawa netted in the 17th and 18th minutes to put the Germans ahead. Nuri Sahin scored Dortumund’s third with 20 minutes gone. Prijovic replied for Legia four minutes later. Ousmane Dembele scored Dortmund’s fourth after 29 minutes and the first half scoring was rounded off by Marco Reus in the 32nd minute. Reus scored his second of the night in the 52nd minute but five minutes later Michal Kucharcyk bagged Legia’s third. Felix Passlack made it 7-3 nine minutes from time. Nemanja Nikolic did reply for the Polish side two minutes later. Reus completed his hat-trick in the 93rd minute.
Sporting Lisbon 1-2 Real Madrid
Real Madrid were pushed all the way by their Portuguese hosts tonight. The Spanish side took the lead after 16 minutes through Raphael Varane after 29 minutes. Sporting were dealt a major blow in the second half when Joao Pereira was sent off after 64 minutes. They did however draw level ten minutes from time through an Adrian Silva penalty. However Karim Benzema headed Madrid back in front four minutes from the end.
Group G
FC Copenhagen 0-0 FC Porto
FC Porto were frozen out in Denmark this evening. Neither side could break the deadlock in what was a rather forgettable game.
Leicester City 2-1 Clube Brugge
Leicester City’s Premier League struggles weren’t apparent tonight as they saw off their Belgian visitors to seal their spot in the Last 16. Shinji Okazaki fired The Foxes ahead after just five minutes. A Riyad Mahrez spot kick on the half hour mark made it 2-0. Brugge did peg one back after their break thanks to Jose Izquierdo.
Group H
Dinamo Zagreb 0-1 Lyon
Lyon worked hard to take three vital points from Croatia tonight. Zagreb were as defensive as ever and did enough to keep the sides level at the break. Star striker Alexandre Lacazette broke the deadlock for the French side in the 72nd minute securing the victory.
Sevilla 1-3 Juventus
Juventus pulled off an impressive comeback to debate Sevilla tonight while securing their spot in the Last 16. The hosts had taken the lead in the 9th minute through Nicolas Pareja. The La Liga side were dealt a blow in the 36th minute when Franco Vazquez was sent off picking up his second yellow. Juventus drew level when Gabriel Mercado brought down Leonardo Bonucci. Claudio Marchiso converted the resulting spot kick. The Old Lady left it late but eventually they made the most of their numerical advantage. Bonucci put them into the lead 6 minutes from time and Mario Mandzukic completed the scoring in added time.
