Jim Furyk to captain Team USA for 2027 Ryder Cup

Jim Furyk will return as captain of the US Ryder Cup team in 2027 when the event takes place in Ireland.

Tiger Woods turned down the role earlier this month after he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and rolling his car in Florida.

Furyk, 55, previously captained the side in Paris in 2018 when Europe sealed a dominant 17½-10½ victory.

He will become just the fourth US captain in the modern era of the competition, which began in 1979, to lead the team twice.

“The opportunity to captain the US Ryder Cup team for a second time is a tremendous honour,” Furyk said.

“I am committed to putting our players in the best position to succeed as we work to reclaim the cup on European soil.”

Next year’s Ryder Cup takes place at Adare Manor in County Limerick from 17-19 September.

Tiger Woods removed himself from consideration paving the way for Furyk.

American Furyk faced criticism after his team lost in 2018, with his four captain’s picks winning just two points from 12 outings at Le Golf National.

Furyk has played in the Ryder Cup on nine occasions, winning in 1999 and 2008.

Europe retained the Ryder Cup at Bethpage in New York in September – the first time either side had won away from home since the ‘Miracle of Medinah’ in 2012 – when Keegan Bradley was captain of the US.

Luke Donald, who led Europe to last year’s victory, will attempt to be the first captain to win three successive Ryder Cups after being confirmed for the 2027 edition.

Furyk gets a second chance at piloting the US Ryder Cup team after Woods took himself out of contention. The job would have gone to the former world number one if he had felt able to take it.

This appointment is a return to America’s old guard after the experiment of going with a more contemporary player in Bradley resulted in home defeat last year.

Furyk is just the fourth US captain to get a second chance since 1979.

Furyk is extraordinarily experienced, but this hardly feels like an inspiring appointment despite his undisputed passion for the US cause.

Once again, though, there seems to have been little cohesive strategy from the PGA of America. Furyk was well beaten by Thomas Bjorn in Paris in 2018 and enjoyed little success as a player, competing on seven losing teams.

He is a hugely respected figure, who skippered the US to victory over the Internationals at the last Presidents Cup in 2024. But Ryder Cups are much more pressured environments.

In appointing Furyk, the US have overlooked figures such as Stewart Cink, Webb Simpson, Justin Leonard and the current Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker.

Furyk made his Ryder Cup debut in 1997. He has been a fixture as a player, vice-captain and now twice as a skipper in every match for three decades. Tellingly, he has never been involved in an away win.

To land a first overseas American win since 1993, he needs to overcome an opposite number in Donald who is regarded as one of the finest captains in European history.
