R&A increase British Open Prize fund
The Royal & Ancient has announced a £200,000 increase in prize money for The 145th Open that will be held at Royal Troon next week.The total prize fund on offer at the Scottish course will be £6.5m with the winner taking home a cheque for £1,175,000 a rise of £25,000 on 2015.
Chief executive of the R&A Martin Slumbers said “The Open is one of the world’s great sporting events and it is important that this is reflected in the prize fund.We want to continue to attract the world’s best golfers to compete in the Championship each year and to enhance its global appeal.”
The golfer that finishes in 70th will receive £15,000. If more than 70 professionals qualify for the final two rounds, additional prize money will then be added. Prize money will decrease by £100 per qualifying place above 70 to a minimum of £9,000. The leading 10 professionals and ties who fail to make the cut will receive £4,625. The next 20 professionals and ties will receive £3,700 with the remaining professionals taking home £3,100.
