Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich PostNL) snatched the first stage of the Tour de France and the yellow jersey at the death – with the peloton bearing down just seconds behind him and teammate Frank van den Broek. The two men had enough time to celebrate together as the Dutch debutant took second place, after a thrilling chase into Rimini on the Adriatic coast.

Mark Cavendish claims stage 21 sprint as Roglič wins Giro d’Italia

Mark Cavendish sprinted to victory in his final Giro d’Italia stage as Primoz Roglic secured the overall title. Cavendish, who will retire at the end of the season, timed his kick superbly to pass his rivals and claim his 17th Giro stage win in Rome. Slovenia’s Roglic finished safely in the peloton to confirm his first Giro title, with Geraint Thomas second.
