Arda Güler inspires Turkey to victory over spirited Georgia

Teenager Arda Guler scored on his European Championship debut as Turkey broke Georgia’s hearts with a thrilling Group F victory in Dortmund. Right-back Mert Muldur gave Turkey the lead in the 25th minute but seven minutes later, Georges Mikautadze scored Georgia’s first goal in a major tournament. Guler’s 65th minute strike saw Turkey regain the lead but the Georgians tested them until the final whistle.

Fernando Santos has stepped down as manager of Portugal. The 68-year-old leaves after Portugal suffered a shock 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Morocco at the World Cup. Santos spent eight years in charge of Portugal, guiding the team to victory at Euro 2016, as well as the inaugural Uefa Nations League in 2019.

Morocco became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final and ended the hopes of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Hwang Hee-chan gave South Korea a sensational injury-time victory over Portugal that meant they beat Uruguay to a last-16 place on goals scored. Hwang ran onto Son Heung-min’s pass in the 91st minute to round off a rapid break and start wild celebrations from his side’s fans in the stands.
