Jonas Vingegaard put on an impressive breakaway ride to win stage seven of the Giro d’Italia and complete his set of Grand Tour stage victories. On the famous Blockahus climb, which featured 13.6km at gradients of up to 14%, the Dane – making his debut at the event – made his move with 5.5km to go. Vingegaard did the climb in a record 38 minutes 22 seconds as he won by 13 seconds from second-placed Felix Gall, of Austria.

Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel break collarbones in horror Basque Country crash

Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel were all involved in a horrific crash at Itzulia Basque Country on Thursday, with the reigning Tour de France champion “stable and conscious” after suffering a broken collarbone and several broken ribs as the race was neutralised following the shocking incident. Evenepoel fractured his collarbone and scapula, while Jay Vine was badly hurt.

American rider Sepp Kuss is set to win this year’s Vuelta a Espana after Dutchman Wout Poels outsprinted Remco Evenepoel to win the penultimate stage. Poels and Evenepoel were part of an early breakaway group, which was reduced to five for a flat finish. And Poels, 35, denied 2022 champion Evenepoel a fourth stage win this year.

Alberto Dainese (DSM-Firmenich) has won the 19th stage of the Vuelta a España, sprinting to victory at the end of a hot 177.4km stage to Íscar in central Spain. Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers launched first after a determined lead-out by Geraint Thomas and the team, but tired up just before the line for a still creditable second place.
