Ecuador’s Jhonatan Narváez won stage four of the Giro d’Italia, just three days after being involved in a major crash which resulted in three of his UAE Emirates-XRG team-mates being forced to abandon the race with serious injuries. Italy’s Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek was third and claimed the overall leader’s pink jersey after previous leader Guillermo Thomas Silva of Uruguay finished more the 12 minutes behind.

The sky appears to be the limit for French sprinting sensation Paul Magnier after the Soudal Quick-Step rider claimed a second Giro d’Italia stage win in three races in Sofia on Sunday. Aged just 22, Magnier lit up the opening few days in Bulgaria and saved his best for the capital as he overpowered illustrious rivals Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) and Dylan Groenewegen (Unibet Rose Rockets) to win by half a wheel-length.

Paul Magnier wins opening stage of Giro d’Italia marred by crash

France’s Paul Magnier won the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia after a huge crash during a bunch sprint. The 22-year-old Soudal-Quick Step rider claimed his first Grand Tour victory and the overall leader’s pink jersey, edging out Norway’s Tobias Lund Andresen of Decathlon-CMA CGM by inches, with Britain’s Ethan Vernon third for NSN Cycling. With 700 metres to go, the road narrowed, and the compression meant about 20 riders collided, crashing heavily and causing some spectators to flee as they hit the barrier.
