America’s Sam Burns will take a one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the US Open after a terrific finish to the third round at Oakmont. The 28-year-old world number 22 carded three birdies and two bogeys in his one-under 69 as he maintained his overnight lead and moved to four under par. Playing partner JJ Spaun was level with Burns for much of the round but bogeyed the final hole to end the day as he started it, one shot back. Alongside Spaun at three under par is 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott.

Only three players out of a field of 156 are under par at the halfway stage with Burns making six birdies and just one bogey in a morning round that looked better as the day progressed. Masters champion McIlroy had started well and was two under after nine holes, but then unravelled with four bogeys and a double bogey as he posted a four-over 74. Out in front on four under is JJ Spaun, who McIlroy beat in a play-off to win The Players Championship in March.

Rory McIlroy made three bogeys in his final four holes to blow the chance to end his 10-year wait for a major and allow Bryson DeChambeau to snatch the US Open. The Northern Irishman had overhauled a three-shot overnight deficit to the American to lead by two strokes with five to play but missed par putts within four feet at the 16th and 18th derailed his chances in devastating fashion. DeChambeau clinched his second major title with a nerveless four-foot putt.
