Rory McIlroy moved closer to finally winning the Masters with a commanding third-round performance which leaves him two shots clear going into Sunday’s finale. The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland carded a six-under 66 – featuring two eagles – to head a star-stacked leaderboard with a score of 12 under after 54 holes. McIlroy’s advantage looked destined to be bigger but the complexion of the task ahead changed when Bryson DeChambeau narrowed the gap with three birdies in his final four holes.

Justin Rose continued his quest for a maiden Masters triumph at the age of 44 with a solid second round while Rory McIlroy raced back into contention at Augusta National. Veteran Englishman Rose, whose only previous major title came at the 2013 US Open, carded four birdies and three bogeys in a one-under 71 to set the clubhouse target at eight under. McIlroy hit a superb six-under 66 – the lowest round of the day – to move two behind his European Ryder Cup team-mate and alongside Canada’s Corey Conners.

Justin Rose leads the Masters after threatening to break the Augusta course record on an opening day where Rory McIlroy faded after a fast start. A majestic first round saw 44-year-old Rose card a seven-under 65, putting him three clear of a group featuring defending champion Scottie Scheffler at the top of leaderboard. Rory McIlroy has confirmed that he will partner world No 1 Scottie Scheffler in a made-for-TV match against LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka later this year. The match between two of the biggest names on the PGA Tour and two of the highest-profile LIV Golf players will be held in Las Vegas in mid-December, although the exact date, venue and format have yet to be announced.

Xander Schauffele held off the challenge of Justin Rose to win the 152nd Open Championship at the end of a captivating week at Royal Troon. The American hit a stunning bogey-free six-under 65 to finish on nine under, two clear of his playing partner Rose, who shot a 67 in a fascinating duel in breezy conditions. It is a second major title in three months for 30-year-old Schauffele, who becomes the first player to win The Open and US PGA Championship in the same year since Rory McIlroy in 2014.
