Italy appoint Gennaro Gattuso as new head coach

Italy have appointed former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as their manager. The AC Milan legend replaces Luciano Spalletti, who announced his own sacking at a news conference last week. Gattuso, 47, made 73 appearances for Italy and was a member of their 2006 World Cup-winning squad, and will now lead his country into the same tournament 20 years later.

Sandro Tonali charged for alleged breaches of betting rules

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association for alleged breaches of betting rules. The 23-year-old is currently serving a 10-month ban issued by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in October for breaking betting rules in Italy. Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July for £55m.

Italy stars Nicolo Zaniolo and Sandro Tonali have been sent home from the national team squad amid an investigation for illegal betting, Juventus player Nicolo Fagioli is also under investigation for the same. Sky Italia state that the police are seeking clarifications from the Newcastle United midfielder and the Aston Villa winger in the illegal betting case and for their involvement in it.
