Red Bull’s Max Verstappen prevailed in a tense, strategic battle with McLaren’s Lando Norris to win the Spanish Grand Prix. Pole sitter Norris lost the lead heading into turn one and was then held up in traffic. Lewis Hamilton took his first podium finish of the year for Mercedes in third, ahead of teammate George Russell. Charles Leclerc was fifth, leading home Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz.

McLaren’s Lando Norris pipped Max Verstappen’s Red Bull to pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix in a gripping qualifying session. Verstappen had appeared out of reach when he improved his own time, which was already fastest, by more than 0.2 seconds on his final run. But Norris crossed the line a few seconds later to beat Verstappen and take his first pole of the year.

Riccardo Calafiori’s own goal handed Spain a 1-0 victory over defending champions Italy as they booked their place in the last 16 at Euro 2024. The defender’s misfortune 10 minutes after the break ultimately settled the Group B contest in Gelsenkirchen, although had it not been for the heroics of keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made a string of fine saves the Spaniards would have prevailed in some comfort.

Spain made an emphatic start to their quest to win a fourth European Championship with an impressive victory over Croatia at Olympiastadion Berlin. First-half goals by Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Carvajal essentially settled the outcome before the break and, although Croatia offered little, this must still go down as a statement win for La Roja.
