Russell holds off Verstappen to win thrilling finale in Azerbaijan

Mercedes’ George Russell held off a late challenge from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to win an Azerbaijan Grand Prix enlivened late on by two safety car periods. Russell dominated the first part of the race while Verstappen was climbing up from eighth place on the grid before becoming stuck behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. But two safety cars in quick succession put the Red Bull on Russell’s tail for an 11-lap chase to the flag. Behind the top two, Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar drove a strong race to the final podium position.

George Russell took an imperious pole position for Mercedes at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as his team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli crashed out. Russell beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by a massive 0.837 seconds while Antonelli, who leads the Britain by 81 points in the championship, will start in 16th. The Italian hit the inside wall at Turn One in the first session and was knocked out. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was third ahead of Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Isack Hadjar extends contract at Red Bull

Frenchman Isack Hadjar is to stay at Red Bull as Max Verstappen’s team-mate for the 2027 season. The 21-year-old was promoted to the senior team this season after a rookie year with Racing Bulls and has managed to be closer to Verstappen on pace than any team-mate since Daniel Ricciardo in 2018. His best result this season came with a third place at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Formula 1 announces 2027 calendar with more Sprints

Formula 1 has increased the number of sprint races from six to 10 for the 2027 World Championship. Sprint events, which feature a shorter race on Saturday and an extra qualifying session on Friday, will be held for the first time in Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi. The other sprints will be in Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, and Qatar, it was revealed as the calendar was formally announced. The maximum number of sprints previously in a season has been six. The 2027 season is scheduled to start in Bahrain on 12-14 March, followed by Saudi Arabia a week later, but both events will remain in doubt while the war in the Middle East continues.

Antonelli wins in Madrid as Norris loses out under virtual safety car

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the Spanish Grand Prix after McLaren’s Lando Norris lost out because of the timing of a virtual safety car. Norris was leading comfortably from pole position when the VSC was called on lap 15. The timing was terrible for the world champion – he had already passed the pit entry when the VSC was called. That meant Antonelli and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen were able to pit under the VSC, saving time, while the caution period ended before Norris could make it around to the pits again.
