Antonelli charges to pole ahead of Belgian Grand Prix

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli took a scintillating pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix, leaving team-mate and title rival George Russell trailing in fourth, more than 0.5 seconds adrift. The Italian, who leads the championship from Russell by 25 points, beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.317secs, even though the four-time champion had the help of a tow from team-mate Isack Hadjar. McLaren’s Lando Norris was an impressive third, 0.440secs back, despite bailing on his final lap, but the world champion has a 10-place grid penalty.

Antonelli beats Ferrari duo to pole for British Grand Prix

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli took pole position for the British Grand Prix with another impressive performance to beat the Ferraris and team-mate George Russell. The Italian, who won the sprint race at Silverstone earlier on Saturday, beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.175 seconds.

Lewis Hamilton was third in the second Ferrari, ahead of George Russell, who was 0.370secs slower than his 19-year-old team-mate. Isack Hadjar took fifth, beating team-Max Verstappen for only the second time all year when both finished qualifying, the Dutchman split from the Frenchman by McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Russell claims controversial pole after Verstappen crash in Austria

Mercedes driver George Russell controversially snatched pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc with the last lap of the session. The result came amid late drama as Russell set his lap, beating Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, despite passing yellow flags for a crash by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen at the penultimate corner. Russell’s team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who was running just ahead of the Briton, also passed the Verstappen incident, but did not improve his time and will line up fourth.
