Antonelli wins action packed Canadian Grand Prix

George Russell suffered a major blow to his title hopes as retirement from the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix handed victory to team-mate Kimi Antonelli. The two Mercedes drivers had staged a gripping battle for the lead, swapping places several times, and were still nose to tail when Russell’s car suddenly stopped on lap 30. Antonelli’s fourth win in a row, coupled with Russell’s retirement puts the Italian 43 points ahead in the championship. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton got the better of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen to round out the podium places.

George Russell beat Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli to pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix with the very last lap of the qualifying session. A final run on which he did two flying laps enabled him to pip Antonelli by 0.068 seconds. Antonelli had looked set to beat his team-mate when he eclipsed the time set by McLaren’s Lando Norris on the Briton’s first run, with Russell’s first lap on his final run good enough only for third.

The title battle between Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli boiled over for the first time as the Englishman won a gripping sprint race at the Canadian Grand Prix. Russell and Antonelli collided in one incident and the Italian ran off track in another as they battled for the lead of the race in the early laps. Antonelli’s second off-track incident handed second place to McLaren’s Lando Norris and the three cars fought nose to tail until the end of the race.

George Russell bounced back after a difficult recent run to beat Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli to sprint pole at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Briton, who is 20 points adrift of the Italian after four races this season, headed Antonelli by 0.068 seconds after being fastest on both runs in final qualifying. Lando Norris headed an all-McLaren second row, 0.315secs off pole and 0.019secs in front of team-mate Oscar Piastri.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli held off McLaren’s Lando Norris in a race-long battle to win the Miami Grand Prix and take a commanding championship lead. The 19-year-old Italian’s third win in a row moves him 20 points – not far from a clear win – ahead of team-mate George Russell, who finished fourth on Sunday, behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Antonelli prevailed in a gripping race, initially staging a three-car fight also including Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, before the race distilled down to a tussle between the Mercedes and Norris.
