Verstappen fends off Leclerc to win thrilling Las Vegas Grand Prix

Max Verstappen fought back from a five-second penalty with a damaged car to win a gripping Las Vegas Grand Prix. He complained on Wednesday it was “99% show” but the show was all on track in one of the best races of the season. Verstappen, his team-mate Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc swapped and re-swapped places throughout as they fought for the podium positions.

Leclerc on pole ahead of inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc took pole position for the Las Vegas Grand Prix after Ferrari dominated qualifying in Formula 1’s prestigious new race in Sin City. Leclerc was quicker by just 0.044 seconds than team-mate Carlos Sainz, who has a 10-place grid penalty and will start 12th. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen – who was third fastest – will therefore start alongside Leclerc.

F1 to race in Las Vegas from 2023

Formula One will return to Las Vegas next year with the race taking place on the famous Las Vegas Strip. The grand prix will be held on a Saturday night in November, potentially around Thanksgiving, with the track sweeping past some of the city’s most legendary landmarks, hotels and casinos.
