Nico Hulkenberg will join the Sauber team for the 2025 season before their transformation into the factory Audi team in 2026. The 36-year-old German is the first driver to sign for Audi as they build up to their debut season in Formula 1. Formula 1 has confirmed a 24-race schedule for 2025 that will see the season start in Australia for the first time since 2019. The 2025 calendar features the same 24 circuits as F1’s 2024 schedule, which was the longest in the sport’s history, but there have been changes to the order for the world championship’s 75th anniversary season.

Carlos Sainz led Charles Leclerc to a Ferrari one-two in the Australian Grand Prix as Max Verstappen’s domination of Formula 1 stalled. The Red Bull driver was forced out of the race with a brake issue while McLaren’s Lando rounded out the podium ahead of his teammate and home favourite Oscar Piastri. Sergio Perez finished fifth while Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was demoted from sixth to eight for a late incident.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen fought off a challenge from Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to take pole position for the Australian Grand Prix. Sainz was quickest in the first two parts of qualifying but the world champion bounced back in the top 10 shootout to take pole by 0.27 seconds. McLaren’s Lando Norris will start third ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc after a grid penalty for Red Bull’s Sergio Perez for impeding.

Logan Sargeant will miss the Australian Grand Prix after Williams gave his team-mate Alex Albon their sole remaining car for the rest of the weekend following the Thai driver’s crash in practice. Albon caused irreparable damage to his car in a huge shunt during first practice on Friday, after which it emerged that Williams do not have a spare chassis with them in Melbourne.
