Cristiano Ronaldo was left in tears after his penalty was saved in extra time but Portugal still progressed to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 following a dramatic shootout victory over Slovenia. Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa was the hero of the night as he made a crucial save in the final moments of extra-time to deny Benjamin Sesko before saving three Slovenian penalties in a row enabling Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva to send the 2016 Champions into the last eight.

Romania and Slovakia both progress after fiery draw

Romania finished top of Group E as they and Slovakia reached the last 16 at Euro 2024 with an entertaining draw in Frankfurt. Ondrej Duda gave Slovakia a 24th-minute lead when got in behind the Romanian defence to power in a header from Juraj Kucka’s pinpoint cross. Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent, and Romania equalised before half-time as Razvan Marin fired a ferocious penalty into the top corner after David Hancko fouled Ianis Hagi in the box.

Füllkrug strikes late to save Germany’s blushes against Switzerland

Substitute Niclas Fullkrug scored a late equaliser for Germany as they rescued a draw with Switzerland to top Group A. The Swiss thought they were going through to the last 16 as group winners after an early goal from Dan Ndoye until Fullkrug headed in the equaliser. There was an outburst of celebration from home supporters behind the goal as Germany maintained their unbeaten start to Euro 2024.

England wasted the chance to secure their place in the Euro 2024 knockout stages as Group C winners as they were fortunate to take a draw from a dismal display against Denmark in Frankfurt. Gareth Southgate’s side would have topped Group C with a win after the earlier draw between Slovenia and Serbia – but were ultimately grateful for a point from a disorganised, shambolic mess of performance.
