Kai Havertz scored a stoppage-time winner to fire Arsenal to a crucial 1-0 victory against Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon. The last-eight rubber looked to be heading for a goalless draw before substitute Havertz latched on to Gabriel Martinelli’s ball to deliver a fine finish in the first minute of added time to put Arsenal in control of the contest ahead of next week’s return match at the Emirates.

Incoming Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim saved one of his greatest Sporting victories for his last home game to condemn Manchester City to a third successive defeat for the first time since April 2018. Romania and Slovakia both progress after fiery draw

Romania finished top of Group E as they and Slovakia reached the last 16 at Euro 2024 with an entertaining draw in Frankfurt. Ondrej Duda gave Slovakia a 24th-minute lead when got in behind the Romanian defence to power in a header from Juraj Kucka’s pinpoint cross. Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent, and Romania equalised before half-time as Razvan Marin fired a ferocious penalty into the top corner after David Hancko fouled Ianis Hagi in the box.

Schick keeps Czech Republic alive with draw against Georgia

European Championship newcomers Georgia held the Czechia to a 1-1 draw Saturday, taking a shock lead through a Georges Mikautadze penalty before an equaliser off the chest of Patrik Schick. Saba Lobjanidze could have won it for Georgia at the death but blazed his shot over the bar after a breakaway and both sides, with one point from two games, need a win in their final Group F match to progress to the knockout stages.

It was honours even at the Stade Velodrome as Marseille – via a fantastic equaliser from Chancel Mbemba – recovered from going a goal down to secure a draw from their UEFA Europa League first leg tie with Liverpool’s conquerors Atalanta.
