Arsenal got back to winning ways in the Champions League with a commanding victory over Sporting at Estadio Jose Alvalade. Gabriel Martinelli tapped home from Jurrien Timber’s low cross as Mikel Arteta’s side went in front early on. They doubled the lead in similar fashion, Bukayo Saka getting in behind the Sporting defence and firing the ball across the box for Kai Havertz to prod in from close range.

Manchester United appoint Rúben Amorim as new manager

Manchester United have appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. The 39-year-old Portuguese, who will move to Old Trafford from Lisbon club Sporting on 11 November, has signed a contract until June 2027. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took charge on an interim basis after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday, will stay on for the club’s next three fixtures.

Txiki Begiristain to leave role as director of football at Man City

Txiki Begiristain will step down as Manchester City’s director of football at the end of the season with Sporting Lisbon’s Hugo Viana replacing Pep Guardiola’s trusted advisor, the Premier League champions said Saturday. Begiristain joined City in 2012 after working in the same role at Barcelona between 2003 and 2010. The Spaniard was widely credited with convincing his former Barcelona team-mate Guardiola to become City manager in 2016.

Liverpool target Rúben Amorim won’t guarantee Sporting future

Liverpool managerial candidate Ruben Amorim says he “can’t make any guarantees” that he will still be Sporting Lisbon boss next season. The 39-year-old is a leading contender to replace the outgoing Jurgen Klopp in the summer. Reports in Portugal today have suggested Liverpool intend to strike a deal with Amorim before the end of the season.
