Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become England’s manager after talks with the Football Association accelerated on Tuesday. The 51-year-old will be the third foreign manager of the men’s team and the first from Germany. The FA has had Tuchel on its shortlist for finding Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor that also included Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and the interim manager, Lee Carsley, among others.

Callum Robinson scored a fine brace as Ireland defeated Azerbaijan 0-3 in Baku in their 2022 World Cup qualifier with Chiedozie Ogbene scoring the third for Stephen Kenny. The result is their first competitive win under Kenny’s charge and takes some pressure off the manager.

Ireland produced a spirited second-half display to secure a morale-boosting 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw against Serbia at the Aviva Stadium. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic had given Serbia a first half lead but with minutes remaining he crashed a clearance off Nikola Milenkovic into his own net to see the spoils shared.

Ireland scrambled to rescue a 1-1 draw at home to Azerbaijan thanks to an 87th minute Shane Duffy header in their 2022 World Cup qualifier. Azerbaijan took a shock lead in first half injury time through a stunning strike from Emin Makhmudov. The result effectively ends any slim hopes Ireland had of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
