Russell takes pole as Mercedes lock out front row at Silverstone

Mercedes’ George Russell pipped teammate Lewis Hamilton to pole position for tomorrow’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone. McLaren’s Lando Norris did enough to see off the Red Bull of Max Verstappen to insure it will be an all British top three. Oscar Piastri will start from P5 in the other McLaren while Nico Hulkenberg produced a superb lap to qualify P6 for Haas.

France hold their nerve to see off Portugal on penalties

France beat Portugal in a penalty shootout to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024 after a tense showdown in Hamburg. Theo Hernandez scored the winning penalty after substitute Joao Felix hit the outside of the post with his effort, the only miss. Players sprinted over to the other end of the pitch to celebrate with fans afterwards, while Portugal, who had overcome Slovenia via a shootout five days ago, were left feeling deflated while they applauded their supporters.

Remco Evenepoel powers to victory on stage time trial – Tour de France

Tadej Pogacar’s lead in the general classification was cut to 33 seconds as Remco Evenepoel stormed to a first victory at the Tour de France. Evenepoel delivered on his pre-stage hype by taking the fight to the Slovenian in the 25.3km individual time trial, despite having a huge fright when he thought he had suffered a puncture late on. Primoz Roglic finished third, just ahead of Jonas Vingegaard.
