Portugal survive major scare to see off Slovenia on penalties

Cristiano Ronaldo was left in tears after his penalty was saved in extra time but Portugal still progressed to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 following a dramatic shootout victory over Slovenia. Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa was the hero of the night as he made a crucial save in the final moments of extra-time to deny Benjamin Sesko before saving three Slovenian penalties in a row enabling Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva to send the 2016 Champions into the last eight.

Late own-goal sees France edge out Belgium

A late own goal by Jan Vertonghen sent France into the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 at Belgium’s expense. A game that had lacked quality and excitement for large periods looked destined for extra time, but a shot by substitute Randal Kolo Muani deflected off Vertonghen with five minutes remaining to seal the victory at Dusseldorf Arena. France had missed several chances before that as once again their lack of a cutting edge let them down.

Biniam Girmay makes history with stage 3 sprint victory – Tour de France

Richard Carapaz grabbed the first yellow jersey of his career on Stage 3 at the Tour de France, but Monday’s finale in Turin was all about Biniam Girmay as the Eritrean created history in the sport’s biggest race. Girmay saw off a reduced bunch of sprinters in a messy finale to become the first Black African to win at the Tour, following up from his victory at the Giro d’Italia in 2022.

Spain turn on the style to send Georgia home

Spain set up a blockbuster quarter-final tie with Euro 2024 hosts Germany by surviving an early scare to ease past Georgia. Spain’s Robin le Normand poked Otar Kakabadze’s curling cross into his own net early on but drew level before the break through Rodri. A second half blitz saw further goals from Fabián Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo as the two time champions laid down a statement of intent on a wet night in Cologne.
