A late own goal by Jan Vertonghen sent France into the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 at Belgium’s expense. A game that had lacked quality and excitement for large periods looked destined for extra time, but a shot by substitute Randal Kolo Muani deflected off Vertonghen with five minutes remaining to seal the victory at Dusseldorf Arena. Spain maintained their 100% record at Euro 2024 as they defeated and eliminated Albania – a result that meant England, France and the Netherlands all secured last-16 places. Ferran Torres gave a much-changed Spain side the lead in the 13th minute, finishing low first time from Dani Olmo’s pass with the ball bouncing in off the post.

Romania recorded their first victory at a European Championship in 24 years with a stunning win over Ukraine in Group E. Captain Nicolae Stanciu gave Romania a surprise lead in the 29th minute, finding the top corner with a brilliant strike from 20 yards out. Razvan Marin then doubled the Tricolours’ lead after 53 minutes with Denis Dragus rounding out the scoring.

Harry Kane returned to north London with a goal as Arsenal’s Champions League hopes hang in the balance after they fought out a draw with Bayern Munich in the quarter-final first leg at Emirates Stadium. Kane scored from a spot kick to give the Germans the lead however Leandro Trossard scored a late equaliser to leave the tie finely posied.

The Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2024 automatic qualification hopes are over after a 2-0 home defeat to Greece. Stephen Kenny’s side could still make it to next summer’s tournament via the play-offs but that looks highly unlikely given their poor Nations League ranking.
