Unai Emery has signed a five-year contract with Aston Villa until 2029 in a major boost for the club as they prepare for their first season in the Champions League. Villa made it their top priority to secure Emery with a new long‑term deal this summer after an excellent Premier League campaign. Merlier claims stage 21 sprint as Pogačar wins Giro d’Italia

Tim Merlier claimed his third sprint victory on Stage 21 as Tadej Pogacar completed the first half of his Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double attempt. After suffering a late mechanical, Jonathan Milan was dragged back into the finale by his Lidl-Trek colleagues – but the Italian had spent too much energy to rival Merlier in the showdown. It means Merlier & Milan leave Italy with three wins apiece.

Southampton see off Leeds to win promotion to Premier League

Southampton beat Leeds in the Championship play-off final to secure an immediate return to the Premier League and the £140m to go with it. Home favourite Charles Leclerc wins processional Monaco GP

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc held his nerve to convert pole position at his home Monaco Grand Prix into a controlled victory after a huge first-lap pile-up. A collision between the two Haas cars and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez caused a red flag and led to a race of extreme tyre management by the leaders. Leclerc controlled McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, team-mate Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Lando Norris all race to take Ferrari’s second win of 2024.

Haas pair disqualified from Monaco qualifying after DRS infringement

Both Haas drivers have been disqualified from today’s Monaco Grand Prix qualifying session after their cars failed a legality check. The FIA’s Formula 1 technical delegate Jo Bauer informed the stewards both drivers’ VF-24s did not pass an inspection of the DRS opening. Nico Hulkenberg had qualified P12 ahead of teammate Kevin Magnussen who was due to lineup p15.
