Rory McIlroy moved closer to finally winning the Masters with a commanding third-round performance which leaves him two shots clear going into Sunday’s finale. The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland carded a six-under 66 – featuring two eagles – to head a star-stacked leaderboard with a score of 12 under after 54 holes. McIlroy’s advantage looked destined to be bigger but the complexion of the task ahead changed when Bryson DeChambeau narrowed the gap with three birdies in his final four holes.

Rose retains lead as McIlroy bounces back at The Master

Justin Rose continued his quest for a maiden Masters triumph at the age of 44 with a solid second round while Rory McIlroy raced back into contention at Augusta National. Veteran Englishman Rose, whose only previous major title came at the 2013 US Open, carded four birdies and three bogeys in a one-under 71 to set the clubhouse target at eight under. McIlroy hit a superb six-under 66 – the lowest round of the day – to move two behind his European Ryder Cup team-mate and alongside Canada’s Corey Conners.

Justin Rose set early pace at The Masters

Justin Rose leads the Masters after threatening to break the Augusta course record on an opening day where Rory McIlroy faded after a fast start. A majestic first round saw 44-year-old Rose card a seven-under 65, putting him three clear of a group featuring defending champion Scottie Scheffler at the top of leaderboard. McIlroy’s pursuit of a career-defining Masters win were hit by two late mistakes which leave him seven shots behind Rose.

Sublime Scheffler wins second Masters title

Scottie Scheffler fully justified his status as pre-tournament favourite with a nerveless second Masters title in the space of three years at Augusta National. The world number one carded a closing 68 to finish 11 under par and four shots clear of Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg, with England’s Tommy Fleetwood, two-time major winner Collin Morikawa and Max Homa three strokes further back.

Scheffler one clear of Morikawa after third round – The Masters

American world number one Scottie Scheffler hung on to the Masters lead on an eventful third day where Tiger Woods shot his worst score at a major. Scheffler, who is the hottest favourite at Augusta since Woods in his 2000s pomp, shot a one-under 71 to move seven under and one clear of Collin Morikawa. Morikawa carded a 69 for six under, with Max Homa (73) next on five under.
