Southampton see off Leeds to win promotion to Premier League

Southampton beat Leeds in the Championship play-off final to secure an immediate return to the Premier League and the £140m to go with it. Saints’ 11-year spell in the top flight came to an end after a wretched campaign last time out but, despite finishing one place and three points behind Leeds in fourth, it is they who join Leicester and Ipswich in going up thanks to a first half strike from Adam Armstrong.

Leicester City have been charged by the Premier League with allegedly breaking spending rules during their last three seasons in the top flight. Leicester have been referred to an independent commission for breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and failing to submit audited finances. If found guilty the Championship high-flyers could face a points deduction.

Birmingham sack manager Wayne Rooney after 15 games

Birmingham City have sacked manager Wayne Rooney after just 83 days in charge of the Championship club. The 38-year-old was appointed on 11 October following the controversial decision to dismiss John Eustace, with Blues sixth in the table. Since then they have slipped to 20th, Monday’s 3-0 loss at Leeds having been the ninth defeat of his 15-game tenure.

Luton down Coventry on penalties to reach Premier League

Luton Town completed their journey from non-league to Premier League as they beat Coventry City 6-5 on penalties to win the Championship play-off final at Wembley. Gustavo Hamer equalised for Coventry to cancel out a first-half strike from Jordan Clark as the game finished in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.
