Masters champion Rory McIlroy ended 10 shots behind leader Jhonattan Vegas after round one of the US PGA Championship. Venezuela’s Vegas, 40, birdied five of his final six holes to set the pace at seven under and move two clear of American Ryan Gerard and Australian Cam Davis. Jose Maria Olazabal named third vice-captain for Ryder Cup

Luke Donald has named Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal as his third vice-captain for the Ryder Cup in New York in September. Olazabal was part of Donald’s backroom team in 2023 for Europe’s memorable victory in Rome and again joins Dane Thomas Bjorn and Edoardo Molinari of Italy. Olazabal was the last captain to oversee a European victory on American soil back in 2012.

McIlroy dares to dream after moving day at The Masters

Rory McIlroy moved closer to finally winning the Masters with a commanding third-round performance which leaves him two shots clear going into Sunday’s finale. The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland carded a six-under 66 – featuring two eagles – to head a star-stacked leaderboard with a score of 12 under after 54 holes. McIlroy’s advantage looked destined to be bigger but the complexion of the task ahead changed when Bryson DeChambeau narrowed the gap with three birdies in his final four holes.

Rose retains lead as McIlroy bounces back at The Master

Justin Rose continued his quest for a maiden Masters triumph at the age of 44 with a solid second round while Rory McIlroy raced back into contention at Augusta National. Veteran Englishman Rose, whose only previous major title came at the 2013 US Open, carded four birdies and three bogeys in a one-under 71 to set the clubhouse target at eight under. McIlroy hit a superb six-under 66 – the lowest round of the day – to move two behind his European Ryder Cup team-mate and alongside Canada’s Corey Conners.
