Japan come from behind twice to draw with Netherlands

Japan hit back twice to start their World Cup campaign with an entertaining 2-2 draw against the Netherlands. The Dutch were denied a victory in their the World Cup Group F opener when Koki Ogawa’s 88th-minute header took a deflection off Daichi Kamada before going in at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas. After a drab first half where chances were few and far between, the came to life when an unmarked Virgil van Dijk headed home in the 51st minute from Liverpool team-mate Ryan Gravenberch’s cross.

Georgia reach last 16 with famous win over Portugal

Georgia made history and reached their first major tournament knockout stage with victory over Portugal at Euro 2024. Portugal had already won the group, but were shocked in their final group stage game before the clock struck two minutes as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drilled a low shot past Diogo Costa. Georges Mikautadze added a second from the penalty spot to send the debutants into dreamland and a last 16 tie with Spain.

Tosun the hero as Turkey edge out 10 man Czech Republic

Cenk Tosun scored a stoppage-time winner as Turkey beat the Czech Republic in a fiery final group game to secure a last-16 tie against Austria. The Czechs needed to win Wednesday’s final group game to avoid being eliminated, and they pushed for victory in the tense closing stages. But they left gaps in defence and former Everton striker Tosun cut inside and drove a shot into the back of the net.

Portugal into last 16 with facile win over Turkey

Portugal booked their place in the last 16 as group winners at Euro 2024 following a routine victory over Turkey in Dortmund. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring midway through the first half, striking first time past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. A calamitous own goal doubled Portugal’s lead before the break with Bruno Fernandes putting the icing on the cake after the restart.

Schick keeps Czech Republic alive with draw against Georgia

European Championship newcomers Georgia held the Czechia to a 1-1 draw Saturday, taking a shock lead through a Georges Mikautadze penalty before an equaliser off the chest of Patrik Schick. Saba Lobjanidze could have won it for Georgia at the death but blazed his shot over the bar after a breakaway and both sides, with one point from two games, need a win in their final Group F match to progress to the knockout stages.
