The PGA of America is close to agreeing a landmark scenario in which the US Ryder Cup team will be paid about $400,000 each to take on Europe in September 2025. Europe’s Ryder Cup contingent continues to maintain they should not take a cut of event revenue.

Sergio Garcia has rejoined the DP World Tour as he seeks a European record-equalling 11th appearance at the Ryder Cup. The 44-year-old Spaniard, who is already the event’s record points scorer, wants to match Lee Westwood and Sir Nick Faldo’s European benchmark by playing next year at Bethpage in the USA. His membership of LIV Golf means he has had to pay hefty fines and will serve a suspension in order to rejoin the DP World Tour.

Tiger Woods undergoes back surgery to ‘alleviate pain’

Tiger Woods has undergone back surgery after an injury-hit 2024 season. A statement on Woods’ official X account said the 15-time major winner underwent microdepression surgery of the lumbar spine for nerve impingement in the lower back on Friday. Dr Sheeraz Qureshi, of Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, performed the surgery and deemed it to be successful.

McIlroy and Scheffler to take on Koepka and DeChambeau

Rory McIlroy has confirmed that he will partner world No 1 Scottie Scheffler in a made-for-TV match against LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka later this year. The match between two of the biggest names on the PGA Tour and two of the highest-profile LIV Golf players will be held in Las Vegas in mid-December, although the exact date, venue and format have yet to be announced.

Rory McIlroy to ‘cut back’ future tournament schedule

Rory McIlroy says he is aiming to “cut back” on his tournament schedule in the future after a congested 2024 programme which will have seen him compete in 27 events by the end of the year. The 35-year-old was speaking after posting a closing 66 to tie for ninth place at The Tour Championship in Atlanta.
