Juan Ayuso’s devastating late attack saw the Spaniard swoop to a maiden Giro d’Italia stage win in the race’s first summit finish at Tagliacozza. Ayuso led home a UAE Team Emirates-XRG one-two ahead of Mexico’s Isaac del Toro and Colombia’s Egan Bernal. Out of position for the finale, Primoz Roglic did enough to take over the pink jersey by just four seconds.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy ended 10 shots behind leader Jhonattan Vegas after round one of the US PGA Championship. Venezuela’s Vegas, 40, birdied five of his final six holes to set the pace at seven under and move two clear of American Ryan Gerard and Australian Cam Davis. Barcelona have been crowned Spanish champions for a 28th time after a 2-0 victory over Espanyol on Thursday evening. The win means Barça have an unassailable lead at the top of La Liga. They are seven points clear of Real Madrid with only two games left to play. Alpecin-Deceuninck capitalised on the chaos on the slippery streets of Naples as Kaden Groves picked up his first win of 2025 in a sodden Stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia. The day was marred by a big crash that ended the hopes of 2022 champion Jai Hindley and saw the race neutralised and then stopped. Denmark’s Mads Pedersen celebrated his new contract with Lidl-Trek with his third – and arguably most impressive – win of the Giro d’Italia. Pedersen battled back after being dropped on the tough climb into Matera before holding off Italy’s Edoardo Zambanini and Britain’s Tom Pidcock in a nail-biting sprint to the finish line.
