England were seconds away from an embarrassing exit in Gelsenkirchen as Slovakia defended a lead they had held since the 25th minute when Ivan Schranz raced into the box to poke a low finish past England keeper Jordan Pickford.

Tadej Pogacar moved into the leader’s yellow jersey as France’s Kevin Vauquelin won stage two of the Tour de France. Vauquelin took his first Grand Tour stage victory after breaking away from the front group, making the Arkea-B&B Hotels rider the second French winner of the 2024 race already. Pogacar, of UAE-Team Emirates, powered away on the final climb of the 199.2km stage to Bologna, Italy, but took his main rival and last year’s winner Jonas Vingegaard with him.

Mercedes’ George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix after a collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris while they were fighting for the lead. Red Bull’s Verstappen was given a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Norris after he moved over on the McLaren driver while Norris was trying to pass. The Briton was forced into retirement. Oscar Piastri finished second ahead of the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.

Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala scored as Euro 2024 hosts Germany reached the quarter-finals by beating Denmark in a game that was interrupted by a spectacular storm. The last-16 tussle at Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion was suspended for around 20 minutes towards the end of the first half, as lightning lit up the sky and the pitch was soaked by hail and heavy rain.
