Ireland got off to a dream start when, with just two minutes gone, Dutch skipper Virgil van Dijk was penalised for handling James McClean’s corner and Adam Idah fired home from the penalty spot. However a Cody Gakpo penalty and a second half strike from Wout Weghorst turned the tie for the Dutch.

Liverpool have secured the signing of Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. The Reds will pay between £35m and £45m for the 23-year-old, who scored three goals in five appearances at the World Cup in Qatar. Gakpo is understood to have agreed a deal until 2028.
