Warren Gatland’s team arrived in Rome with the wooden spoon a realistic prospect following successive defeats against Ireland, Scotland and England but managed to see off the Italians who left plenty of scores on the field.

Finn Russell ran the show as Scotland blitzed Wales 35-7 at BT Murrayfield to kick off a Guinness Six Nations campaign with back-to-back victories for the first time. Russell was at his magnificent best as he laid three of his side’s five tries on a plate for his team-mates and was also heavily involved in another.

Warren Gatland’s return was spoiled by Ireland as the world’s number one side humbled Wales in the opening Six Nations match in Cardiff.
