The Welsh Rugby Union has outlined how it plans to cut from four professional teams to three by 2028, with Ospreys and Scarlets set to fight to be the side in south west Wales. The governing body confirmed in April it intended to press on with plans to go down to three men’s teams from the 2028-29 season, with one in the capital, one in the east and one in the west.

Wales’ poor Guinness Six Nations campaign ended in predictable fashion as France inflicted a defeat on Warren Gatland’s team. Les Bleus ensured the title race with leaders and favourites Ireland ran its distance, as Wales provided some bright moments but were ultimately overpowered, with Ireland left needing victory over England to be crowned champions.

Wales recorded a much needed first win of their Guinness Six Nations campaign after beating Italy 29-17 at Stadio Olimpico. Warren Gatland’s team arrived in Rome with the wooden spoon a realistic prospect following successive defeats against Ireland, Scotland and England but managed to see off the Italians who left plenty of scores on the field.
