AS Roma have appointed former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini as their new manager on a three-year contract. Gasperini, who guided Atalanta to third in Italy’s Serie A and qualification for the Champions League this season, replaces Claudio Ranieri. The Italian spent nine successful years in Bergamo but opted for a “new challenge” taking up the reins at the Stadio Olimpico.

Ademola Lookman scored a sensational hat-trick as Atalanta ended a 61-year trophy drought while devastating Bayer Leverkusen’s dream of an unbeaten season in the Europa League final at a boisterous Aviva Stadium. Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen had not lost in 51 games this season and were only two matches from perfection.
