Gordon misses penalty as Everton hold Newcastle

Anthony Gordon missed a penalty in front of the Gwladys Street End as Newcastle and Everton played out a 0-0 draw. The England winger, who left Goodison Park for Newcastle in 2023, had an opportunity to score from 12 yards but Jordan Pickford guessed right to the delight of the home fans. Both teams lacked quality in the final third and neither side could find a way to break the deadlock.

Sheffield relegated after heavy loss to Newcastle

Sheffield United’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed as Newcastle recovered from a sluggish start to thrash Chris Wilder’s side at St James’ Park. Anel Ahmedhodzic gave the visitors a deserved early lead but a brace from Alexander Isak along with goals from Callum Willson and Bruno Guimaraes condemned the Blades to the drop.

Calvert-Lewin penalty rescues draw for Everton at Newcastle

Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a late penalty as Everton gained a vital point in their battle to avoid relegation with a draw at Europe-chasing Newcastle. Alexander Isak gave the hosts a 15th-minute lead when he collected Harvey Barnes’ ball over the visiting defence, cut inside Jarrad Branthwaite and calmly slotted past Jordan Pickford. The visitors were handed a late lifeline as Paul Dummett had his arm around Ashley Young’s neck and wrestled him to the ground with Calvert-Lewin converting the spot kick.

Sandro Tonali charged for alleged breaches of betting rules

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association for alleged breaches of betting rules. The 23-year-old is currently serving a 10-month ban issued by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in October for breaking betting rules in Italy. Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in July for £55m.
