Steven Gerrard will meet Rangers’ owners in London over the coming days to hold talks over a sensational return to Ibrox. The former Rangers boss was due to arrive on Wednesday evening and is scheduled to meet with Rangers’ American owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe, who are leading the hunt for a new head coach. Gerrard is one of a number of credible candidates Rangers plan to speak to this week, as they look to replace Russell Martin, who was sacked after Sunday’s draw at Falkirk.

Benfica appoint José Mourinho as new manager

Jose Mourinho has been appointed as Benfica’s new head coach – and one of his first assignments will be against his old club Chelsea. The Lisbon club turned to the 62-year-old after dismissing Bruno Lage in the early hours of Wednesday morning following a Champions League home defeat to Qarabag of Azerbaijan. Mourinho returns to Benfica after a short stint in charge of the club 25 years ago.
