Two of Anthony Joshua’s “close friends and team members” were killed in the car crash in Nigeria in which the British heavyweight boxer was injured. Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele died when the vehicle they were in, alongside Joshua and another passenger, collided with a stationary truck on a major road near Lagos. Joshua is stable and conscious and did not require emergency medical help, according to Ogun state government.

Teenager Archie Gray’s first senior goal ensured Tottenham bounced back from consecutive Premier League defeats with a narrow victory over Crystal Palace, as Thomas Frank’s side ended the year on a positive note at Selhurst Park. The 19-year-old Gray punished Palace’s failure to deal with a corner from close range three minutes before half-time, after Randal Kolo Muani and then Richarlison were able to win aerial duels following Pedro Porro’s delivery to the back post.

Badly depleted Manchester United clung on to climb back into the Premier League’s top five as Patrick Dorgu’s stunning volley proved enough to beat Newcastle at Old Trafford. Missing seven senior players through injury and international duty including skipper Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Amorim’s side also lost Mason Mount at half-time. Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo’s preference is to move to Manchester City in January. Semenyo’s desire to win trophies is key to his wish to join Pep Guardiola’s side. As yet nothing formal has been agreed, with the January transfer window not open for another week. Chelsea have decided against pursuing a move for Semenyo, 25, after making an initial enquiry with Manchester United also monitoring the situation.
