Alexis Mac Allister’s superb strike saw Liverpool come from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at Anfield as Bradley Barcola went off with “cramp” on an eventful home debut. Barcola was making his first start for Liverpool but felt his calf in the second half and the £123m signing was substituted having missed three good chances to mark the occasion with a goal. Liverpool have appointed Andoni Iraola as their head coach on a two-year contract following the sacking of Arne Slot. The Reds announced Slot’s exit on Saturday, a year after the Dutchman guided them to the Premier League title, and have moved swiftly to bring in a successor. Former Bournemouth manager Iraola, 43, joins after delivering the Cherries’ finest top-flight season to date, finishing in sixth place.
