Chris Wood’s second-half penalty gave Nottingham Forest the advantage in their all-English Europa League semi-final with Aston Villa. The New Zealand striker emphatically converted from 12 yards to put Forest just 90 minutes away from a first European final in 46 years as they took a 1-0 first-leg lead. But they will know there is still work to do if they want to try and follow in the footsteps of Brian Clough’s side which won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980.

Nottingham Forest moved closer to realising their Champions League dream as Anthony Elanga’s solo strike defeated his former club Manchester United. The winger, who joined United as a 12-year-old, sprinted 70 yards before finishing into the bottom corner to catch the visitors cold with an early winner. He joined Forest from United for £15m in 2023, in search of regular football, and continued his excellent season against his former club.

Dean Henderson’s mistake piled more misery on winless Crystal Palace as Chris Wood sealed victory for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. The Palace goalkeeper, in front of watching interim England manager Lee Carsley, allowed Wood’s second-half strike to squirm under his arm. Nottingham Forest have lodged an appeal against their four-point deduction for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules, the club has confirmed. An independent commission found Forest’s losses to 2022-23 breached the threshold of £61m by £34.5m. The loss of points has placed Forest into the relegation zone in 18th place, one point behind Luton Town.
