Pochettino dismisses potential return to Tottenham

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino has ruled himself out the running to replace Ange Postecoglou, saying a return to Tottenham at this point is “not realistic”. Postecoglou, 59, was sacked on Friday, despite leading the club to their first piece of silverware in 17 years with victory in the Europa League. Pochettino, whose five-year stay at the club came to an end in November 2019, has been linked with a return to Tottenham.

Man City close in on deal for Wolves Rayan Aït-Nouri

Man City have agreed a deal worth up to £36.3m for Wolves left-back Rayan Ait Nouri. The 23-year-old is now free to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical. City are hopeful of getting Ait Nouri’s medical completed and the deal finalised before Tuesday’s 7pm deadline which will allow him to play in the Club World Cup.

McAteer on target as Ireland draw with Senegal

The Republic of Ireland had to settle for a share of the spoils as they drew 1-1 with Senegal at Aviva Stadium. Kasey McAteer making his first start for Heimir Hallgrimsson repaid the manager with the opening goal in the 21st minute and a man of the match performance. However Ismaila Sarr found the back of the net for the visitors as they earned a deserved draw.

Gian Piero Gasperini appointed new Roma manager

AS Roma have appointed former Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini as their new manager on a three-year contract. Gasperini, who guided Atalanta to third in Italy’s Serie A and qualification for the Champions League this season, replaces Claudio Ranieri. The Italian spent nine successful years in Bergamo but opted for a “new challenge” taking up the reins at the Stadio Olimpico.

Tottenham sack manager Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham have sacked Ange ­Postecoglou as their manager, describing it as “one of the toughest decisions we have had to make”, and are considering whether to replace him with Brentford’s Thomas Frank, who has a £10m release clause. Marco Silva of Fulham is also in the running. Postecoglou led Spurs to Europa League glory on 21 May, beating ­Manchester United in the final in ­Bilbao to end a 17-year trophy drought.
