New Champions League format throws up heavyweight clashes

Liverpool will face Champions League holders Real Madrid on their return to the competition following the draw for the new-look format. Manchester City and Arsenal both play last season’s semi-finalists Paris St-Germain in their fixtures, while Aston Villa take on Scottish champions Celtic. Each team plays eight fixtures in the ‘league phase’, with this year’s men’s tournament seeing a radical change, including the end of a group stage.

Ireland’s Chiedozie Ogbene joins Ipswich from Luton

Ipswich have sealed the £8m signing of Luton winger Chiedozie Ogbene. The Ireland international, 27, has signed a four-year deal at Portman Road and becomes their 10th signing since they returned to the Premier League. The Tractor Boys had been looking for another forward despite spending almost £100m this summer, after winger Wes Burns suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-0 opening day defeat by Liverpool.

Sven-Göran Eriksson dies aged 76

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has died at the age of 76. Eriksson, the first non-British manager of the England team, led the Three Lions to the quarter-finals at three major tournaments during his five-year spell in charge between 2001 and 2006. In January Eriksson said he had “at best” a year to live after being diagnosed with cancer.

Manchester City beat United on penalties to win Community Shield

Manchester City avenged their FA Cup final defeat by Manchester United as Pep Guardiola’s side triumphed 7-6 on penalties after the Community Shield had finished level at Wembley. Bernardo Silva levelled for the Blues in the final minute but then had City’s first spot-kick saved by Andre Onana to give United the advantage. However, Ederson saved Jadon Sancho’s effort before veteran defender Jonny Evans fired over, allowing Manuel Akanji to secure victory.

Lee Carsley set to take interim charge of England

Lee Carsley looks set to take interim charge for England’s Nations League matches next month. The search for Gareth Southgate’s successor – for which Carsley is likely to be a contender as under-21s manager – is under way after the national team boss resigned two days after his side lost the final of Euro 2024 to Spain.
