Red Bull’s Max Verstappen beat McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in a tight battle for pole position at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Verstappen was just 0.074 seconds quicker than Piastri, who pipped Norris by 0.017secs with the final lap of the session. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was fourth, 0.224secs behind Verstappen, but 0.263secs quicker than team-mate Carlos Sainz who is right behind him.

Xander Schauffele sits top of the leaderboard after an extraordinary Friday at the PGA Championship, where Scottie Scheffler remains in contention despite being arrested ahead of his second round. Schauffele, who matched the lowest round in a men’s major and carded the first 62 in PGA Championship history on the opening day, added a three-under 68 at Valhalla Golf Club to head into the weekend on 12 under and a shot clear of Collin Morikawa.

Juventus have sacked manager Massimiliano Allegri just two days after he led the side to glory in the Coppa Italia. The club cited Allegri’s behaviour during the final minutes of the game as grounds for his dismissal however even before his antics at the Stadio Olimpico, the 56-year-old had been expected to lose his job and be replaced by Bologna coach Thiago Motta.

Friday’s pan-flat Stage 13 had a sting in the tail as crosswinds, crashes and multiple attacks in the latter moments caused plenty of nervous energy in the bunch. From that carnage emerged Jonathan Milan to take victory in Cento, his third of this year’s race. From Saturday the race really ramps up, with an individual time trial and then Sunday’s brutal climb up to Livigno.

Xander Schauffele hit a major record-equalling 62 to set the pace in the first round of the US PGA Championship in Kentucky. The American holed nine birdies in a sensational bogey-free round to lead by three at Valhalla. Americans Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala sit in a tie for second on six under, one stroke ahead of Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Robert MacIntyre, who were among seven players to post five-under-par 66s.
