Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was fourth, his team-mate Charles Leclerc eighth, and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso fifth. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen fought off a challenge from Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz to take pole position for the Australian Grand Prix. Sainz was quickest in the first two parts of qualifying but the world champion bounced back in the top 10 shootout to take pole by 0.27 seconds. McLaren’s Lando Norris will start third ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc after a grid penalty for Red Bull’s Sergio Perez for impeding.

Verstappen did not need a second lap in final qualifying as he beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.319 seconds while his teammate Sergio Perez will start third ahead of the impressive Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso.

Christian Horner will continue in his role as Red Bull team principal after allegations of inappropriate behaviour made against him were dismissed. The 50-year-old was placed under investigation by the F1 team’s Austrian parent company Red Bull GmbH after allegations were made against him by a female colleague.
