Oscar Piastri cut McLaren team-mate Lando Norris’ championship lead by two points with victory in the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix. The Australian led an uneventful race from start to finish as Norris trailed home behind Mercedes’ George Russell, the top three finishing in the order in which they started. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen moved up from sixth on the grid to finish fourth, losing one point to Norris in the championship.

Lando Norris could qualify only third for the sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix – on the weekend the McLaren driver could clinch the world title for the first time. Norris’ team-mate Oscar Piastri, one of his two championship rivals, took pole, with Mercedes’ George Russell second. Jack Doohan will replace Esteban Ocon at Alpine for the final grand prix of the season in Abu Dhabi this weekend. The Australian has already been signed to race for Alpine alongside Ocon’s team-mate Pierre Gasly in 2025. The move to draft in Doohan early comes as part of a deal to allow Ocon to drive for his new team Haas in the post-season test at Abu Dhabi on 10 December.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won a dramatic Qatar Grand Prix that was brought to life by two mid-race safety cars and a penalty for McLaren’s Lando Norris. Verstappen was in a tight fight with Norris throughout the race until the Briton was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for failing to slow for yellow flags. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second ahead of the McLaren of Oscar Piastri ensuring the fight for the Constructor’s title goes down to the final race.

Max Verstappen has lost pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix after being penalised for driving unnecessarily slowly in the final phase of qualifying. The stewards issued the Red Bull driver with a one-place grid penalty. He will therefore start from second place behind George Russell. Race control announced before the end of today’s qualifying session the Red Bull driver was under investigation for his driving prior to his final flying lap.
