The Australian, who won Tuesday’s fourth stage, went on to triumph by half a wheel’s length in Burriana, beating a late charge from the World Hour Record holder with a well-executed bike throw.

Defending champion Remco Evenepoel won stage three of the Vuelta a España in Andorra and in doing so took the race lead. The Soudal Quick-Step rider attacked in the final 300m of the finishing climb to Arinsal, and though Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) was quick to respond to his attack, the Belgian held off the challenge of the Dane to take the victory by one second and collect six bonus seconds

Lotto Dstny’s Andreas Kron took an emotional win on a weather-affected stage two of the Vuelta a Espana. Heavy rain meant the general classification times for the 181.8km stage were taken nine km from the finish in Barcelona. At that point, EF Education-Easy Post rider Andrea Piccolo was narrowly ahead of Astana’s Javier Romo to secure the leader’s red jersey.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen survived losing the lead in early rain and a red flag for a late torrential downpour to win a chaotic Dutch Grand Prix. Verstappen equalled the all-time record of nine victories in a row and took his 11th win of the season to extend his championship lead to 138 points. A shower just as the race started dropped Verstappen to second behind team-mate Sergio Perez before he repassed on lap 13, while heavy rain with eight laps to go forced a red flag and a 45-minute delay.
