George Russell suffered a major blow to his title hopes as retirement from the lead of the Canadian Grand Prix handed victory to team-mate Kimi Antonelli. The two Mercedes drivers had staged a gripping battle for the lead, swapping places several times, and were still nose to tail when Russell’s car suddenly stopped on lap 30. Antonelli’s fourth win in a row, coupled with Russell’s retirement puts the Italian 43 points ahead in the championship. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton got the better of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen to round out the podium places.

Tottenham Hotspur overcame Everton to secure the result they required to ensure Premier League survival on a day of nerve-shredding tension. Spurs needed a point to avoid their first relegation from the top flight since 1977 and send West Ham United into the Championship instead, and only their third home league win of a dismal season ensured they sent their fellow Londoners down instead. Joao Palhinha scored the only goal of the game rendering the Hammers’ 3-0 win over Leeds fruitless.

Norway’s Fredrik Dversnes won stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia after the final lap in Milan was neutralised because of rider complaints about the race conditions. The 29-year-old Uno-X Mobility rider was rewarded for his breakaway and crossed the line for the biggest win of his career, ahead of three Italians – Mirco Maestri, Martin Marcellusi and Mattia Bais – as an expected bunch sprint never materialised. Race organisers opted to neutralise the final 5km for the general classification, with that ruling then extended to the entire fourth and final lap. It was a surprising end to a flat 157km stage from Voghera to Milan, which looked tailor-made for the sprinters.

George Russell beat Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli to pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix with the very last lap of the qualifying session. A final run on which he did two flying laps enabled him to pip Antonelli by 0.068 seconds. Antonelli had looked set to beat his team-mate when he eclipsed the time set by McLaren’s Lando Norris on the Briton’s first run, with Russell’s first lap on his final run good enough only for third.

Oli McBurnie’s stoppage-time goal gave Hull City a dramatic victory in the Championship play-off final over reinstated Middlesbrough and took the Tigers back to the Premier League. Boro were given a place in the final after Southampton, who beat them over two legs in the semi-final, were expelled on Tuesday for the Spygate scandal.
