A “gobsmacked” Lewis Hamilton said he was in shock after he landed his first pole position in Ferrari colours for Saturday’s sprint race in China. Hamilton who edged out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by just 0.018 seconds while the much fancied McLaren duo struggled with Oscar Piastri qualifying third as Lando Norris had to settle for sixth behind Charles Leclerc and George Russell.

McLaren’s Lando Norris takes pole for season opening Australian GP

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri made it a McLaren one-two in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix, while Lewis Hamilton took eighth on his Ferrari debut. Norris and Piastri made life difficult for themselves with mistakes on their first laps in the final part of qualifying, but both produced strong laps on their final runs. Briton Norris beat Australian Piastri by 0.084 seconds as both knocked early pace-setter Max Verstappen’s Red Bull down to third in Melbourne.

Norris takes pole for US GP thanks to late yellow flag

McLaren’s Lando Norris beat title rival Max Verstappen’s Red Bull to pole position at the United States Grand Prix with what he said was “the best lap of my career”. Norris was helped by Mercedes driver George Russell crashing late in the session, which prevented any driver improving on their second laps. Norris had been 0.031 seconds quicker than Verstappen on their first laps, but the Dutchman had started his final lap much better than the Briton, only for both to have to abort.

Sergio Perez drove a consummate race with help from the safety car to beat Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen and win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Perez and Verstappen fought a long, flat out battle after the Mexican leapfrogged ahead by being able to save time by making his pit stop under the safety car.
